Chicago - The Windy City

City Portal : http://www.chicago.com/
Official City website : http://www.cityofchicago.org/

Chicago (a.k.a the Windy City) is my former home town. I lived there for almost 12 years. It is the third most populous city of the USA. It is a great tourist destination especially in summer (June, July, August). People are welcome to visit this city in the winter if they are brave enough to withstand chilly northern winds and inches of snow.

Millions of peole visit chicago every year - it has numerous tourist attractions. Why should you visit chicago:

- Chicago is a big city but it is not over-flowing with people like in New York. Chicago is also much more calm and quiet as compared to NYC.

- Chicago is easily accessible via plane or train (AmTrak). Chicago's O'Hare Airport is one of the world's business in the world. Duty-Free shops are kinda expensive. for complete details (Chicago O'Hare Airport). Similarly, If you are arriving via train, you will find Union Station to be very unique. It is kinda like a mini-airport with trains and people arriving from different parts of the USA. (Chicago Union Station).

- It has great public transport system, much much better than NYC. Subways and most of the buses run through out the night. Public Transport is also very affordable. CTA (Chicago Transit Authority) buses and subway cover all of the Chicago popular destinations. More information can be found in CTA's website : Chicago Transport Authority

- It offers a unique shopping experience in form of Magnificent Mile. This upscale shopping is right in the downtown with stores like BloomingDale, Nordstorm, Saks Fifth Avenue and so on. One rumour has it British Harrods chain store going to open in Magnificent Mile soon. Keep an eye on that.

- Magnificient Mile also features world's best hotels which include : Drake Hotel, Ritz Carlton, Park Hyatt etc.

- Chicago also known for its sky-scrappers - including Sears Tower (one of the tallest building in the USA - formerly world's tallest building), John Hancock Center (World's tallest residential building), Water Tower Place, and Park Tower). There is one restaurant in John Hancock Center's 84 floor (a Chinese) - I strongly recommend to have a dinner at least once there - food is great and so is the city view.

- Numerous museums are also a great tourist destination including: Al-Capone (former gang-lord of Chicago - near water tower place), Adler Planetarium, Field Museum, Museum of Science and Technology, Chicago institute of Art, Museum of Contemporary Art. The complete list of chicago museums can be found here : List of Chicago Museums

- Baha'i Temple in the northern part of Chicago is a great place to visit. It is also almost can be reach via subway - you probably need to walk 5-10 minutes. Bhai'a Temple Website

- Chicago is home to world-class educational instituitions. Most of them offer tours of their facilities during summer. These educational instituitions include:
Loyola University
DePaul University - Go Blue Demons (Oops! ya i studied in DePaul)
Northwestern University
UIC
Illinois Inst. of Technology

- Crime rate (violent crimes) is declining in Chicago. It is much safer than LA or NYC. Although there are some active gangs and thus gang-related violence. These gangs are normally confined in deep south and west part of the city. Downtown and near-north area is considered very safe. Although late night lonely strolls are not recommended.

Vacations - tips, planning and etc.

Vacations - tips, planning and etc.

Current high-intensity corporate environment demands person should take some time off from regular routine and go on vacation. This is not as simple
as some people might think. You have to plan every step - in order relax to the fullest - otherwise it might become a headache. Badly plan vacations definitely result in that. In that case, there is no need for vacations - you deal with many headaches during normal work days.

I have recently came back from vacationing in Singapore - It was fun, very relaxing, and very healthy (as I mostly walked from morning to night). I enjoyed to the fullest - the reason - I planned it very thoroughly. The main reason being the Internet. I thoroughly checkout all the attractions, air fares, hotels and visa information using the internet. Basically, the following points illustrates my vacationing strategy:

- Travel during the off-season. I went to Singapore in May - which is an off-season as schools, colleges are normally open throughout the world (not sure about the southern hemisphere though :P).

- Always keep some extra days off in reserve - probably you wanted to extend the stay or want to fight off the jet lag.

- Search the internet thoroughly.

- Search airline websites, and travel-related websites for best air-fares deals. Sometimes you might find a better air-fare at airline website instead of finding it on a 3rd party website.

- Always try to travel on a good airline - nothing can subsitute for quality. Larger airlines normally doesn't have technical issues - so you can rest assure that you won't get stuck on an airport.

- Same goes for the hotels - Yeah I would rather spend 20 or 30 bucks more in a better hotel.

- It is also important to check out laws of the country you are planning to visit. Case in point, Singapore forbidden chewing gum - possession = $ 500 fine. Similarly some countries have very strict laws for jay-walking. It is better to be well-informed.

- Once you get to your destination - please be respectful of local customs and traditions. Be friendly and try to mingle with general population. Every one loves tourists - as it's an honor that someone from far far land found their country interesting enough to visit.

- If you are well-organized kind of guy like - you should make list of attractions you wanted to visit. Internet can help you tremendously. E.g., In Chicago various attractions like (Chicago Art Institute, Shredd Aquarium, Museum of Science & Technology) each has free admission on different week of day. (Admission fee normally is around $ 7 - $ 10. I know this because I lived in Chicago and visited them only during free admission day). Little browsing can help you save dime and nickle here and there.

- Improve your health on your vacation. I lost pounds of fat and gained more muscle mass during my 18 day vacation in Singapore. Reason - I walked, walked and walked. I used cab twice or thrice. Walking is the best way to get around - and it is best way to get familiar with the city. I am now like a walking yahoo maps - give me place of start and destination in Singapore - I can map it out for you.

- Try local cuisine but refrain from over eating. Also try find out travel advisories for eating and drinking water information. WikiTravel is a great source for such information.

UPDATE

- I typically search the Internet for weather information for the city I about to visit. This helps me pack accordingly, pack weather accessories if required and helps me lighten my luggage.

Karachi to Singapore - Part 9 (The Trip Back Home)

Like I said in my previous entry - I wanted spend all my time walking around the city until I get dead tired yesterday - It actually happened. After eating some Malaysian/Indoneasian food on Arab Street yesterday, I hailed a cab and went back to hotel. I was tired and actually I had a craving for smoke (although I quit 1 year ago).

I woke up late today - around 9:00 AM (which is quite late for me - normally I wake up around 6:30-6:45 AM), had the breakfast. I got the flight at 2:00 AM meaning I have to check out within an 11:00. But I wanted to see the beautiful Singapore's Changi Airport. Changi is one of those airports you will never get bored (Dubai is my second favorite).

I left the room and check out of the hotel and asked the front desk for my transportation back to the airpot - they couldn't provide one at this time. FINE!!! cab then. Hopped on a cab that sped towards the Changi Airport.

The trip to airport took around 30 minutes. Thanx to great traffic laws and their strict enforcement no traffic jams no accidents and driving is defintitely a pleasure in Singapore.

I arrived at airport (TERMINAL 1) around 10:15 AM - quite early. The check-in wouldn't start around 1:10 PM - I had plenty of time. This might be strange for the readers - considering an airport a tourist attraction - but it is. It is kinda part airport, part rain forest (with fake bird sounds - smart) this airport kinda of like sneak peak for tourists what he/she will experience during his/her stay in Singapore.

I was reading the sign-board trying to figure out where everything is. One thing caught my eye Free Cinema for transit passengers. Wow a free cinema - I never saw that in any airport. Well I really didn't wanna see any movie - so I had pass that free cinema thing. Food was my immediate concern, they should have subway here - besides all the wide range of restaurants available (from Indian, Malay, Chinese and western style). Yes there was - my favorite fast food chain SUBWAY (oops in Terminal 2 though - well this have to wait - no worries because Singapore Airlines operate from Terminal 2 - I have to go there anyway).

roof top swimming pool area, gym, spas, hotel rooms for transit passengers all these goodies at one airport. Wow great, they also have chairs with vibrator alert. You feed in your flight departure information, the seats vibrate once boarding starts. AMAZING....

Time flys when you are having fun - it certainly did for me - it was 12:00 PM i decided to head to terminal 2 - i want to eat that subway sandwich - check my emails - walk around terminal 2 as well - also the duty-free area. Now where is that free terminal shuttle.

One thing you can't avoid Duty Free shops. No I think Changi and Dubai airports will not survive without them. Numerous duty free shops - I think it not possible for anyone to check out all of them during transit stay. You can find almost anything: (besides chewing gum) i guess. Most of them, as you can guess it, sell electronic gadgets, cosmetics, fragances the typical items you see at any duty free stores.

One positive thing about window shopping it kills time and kills it rather quickly - before i knew it was time for me check-in. Now I am putting final touch to this blog - They will start boarding in few minutes (yes - you can get free internet at Changi as well). I hope you have enjoyed this episode as well.

Karachi to Singapore - Last trip around the city Part 8

Today I was very busy as tomorrow I will be leaving for Karachi - I decided to my last minute shopping and trip around the city. Shopping has priority - actually top priority - gifts for everyone. My wallet isn't that happy about it. Best place to find everything @ bargin price - guess what - yes Mohd. Mustafa - you can't beat it - considering the time limitations.

There is an old tradition - whoever comes to Singapore always buy atleast one wrist watch. Down at Mustafa they have got huge collection (budget to moderately expensive). Some toys for kids - that's a must - otherwise i will get slaughtered as soon as I step in.

And yes I also bought a new shiny Sony Digital Camera (i needed it badly):

Sony CyberShot DSC-P100 Digital Camera - Silver - 5.1 Megapixels - 3x Optical Zoom - 6x Digital Zoom - 1.8 Active Matrix TFT Color LCD - 32MB Memory Stick Incl

AFTER buying this and that - I headed back to the hotel - to dump all that. First time in approx. 2 weeks or so I used the cab. That's the real advantage of Singapore - distances are not so great - people who love walking (like myself) - that's best way to see around the city. It's excellent for your health and you get familiar with terrain very quickly.

I decided to start from the far end of the city WTC and walk my way towards the Sultan Mosque (do wanna try some Indoneasian food), and eventually my hotel and then pack.

I am always filled with some sadness at end of every vacations, used to associate with particular city or country, now I have realized it is due to back to boring routine of work, work and more work. But this little vacation has done enough good to my body and soul. Thanx to much walking I have definitely got into shape.

Investment in Pakistan - Part 2

Investment in Pakistan - Part 2
(Continued from Investment in Pakistan - Part 1)

Real Estate
After stock market, this sector is one of the top-performing sector currently in Pakistan. After 9-11, due to huge foreign remittances, real-estate market in Pakistan has flourished by many leaps and bounds. A typical 500 sq. yds house in Karachi prior to 9-11 was priced around Rs. 4.0 million, now typically goes for Rs. 12 million and above (depending on the construction and ofcourse locality).

This doesn't mean you are left out. No, there is miles and miles of land available around the deserted beach areas of Hawks Bay in Karachi at very cheap rate. With the rumor about Dubai's construction group planning to build a new city around these deserted beaches - the price of that land is for sure going to sky-rocket.

Alternative Power Sources
Due to increased power shortages and rising power needs, the new market for alternative power sources (solar and wind-based power generation) is slowly emerging as a new sector for investment. Although, there no large MNC (multi-national corps.) formally players in this market.
But with increase in power consumption and lack of hydro- or nuclear power stations in Pakistan, I am sure this sector will be a major one in up-coming years.

Consumer Products
All the recent positive economic activity has definitely raised the purchasing power and size of the middle class. Thus creating a pool of people with some money to spare. These are perfect target audiences for companies offering consumer products or services. In this broad sector, we have seen exponential growth for companies like McDonald's, Pizza hut, and the rest of junk food gang. Another reason for their growth is Pakistanis' Love for Food. Lack of health-consciousness also favours this trend. I never actually saw KFC so crowded in US as compared to those in Pakistan.

Personally I am for StarBucks to open up an outlet in Karachi :P

  • 2003 : S$ 474 million
  • 2004 : S$ 580 million
  • 2005 : S$ 716 million

Electricity - consumption: 33.2 billion kWh (2004)- that averages to 2.76 billion kWh

Singapore Stock Exchange:
On December 1, 1999, SGX was established following the amalgamation of the two exchanges: Stock Exchange of Singapore and Singapore Intl
Monetary Exchange. It is now one of the major stock markets in the Asia-Pacific region.

These numerical stats are definitely an indication of very rapid progress and development. My last visit was in 1997, ten years ago, Singapore has definitely changed. That change has been a positive one. Singapore People are one of the hardest working people, stiff laws are strictly enforced, and corruption is virtually non-existent. No wonder Singapore enjoys one of the highest standard of living in Asia.

Why Singapore

Why Singapore

Well I have been vacationing in Singapore for almost 12-13 days. This is a very short time period to judge a society but even in this short time period I have learn alot about this great city of Asia.

Racial Harmony
Singapore is a multi-cultural, multi-religion, multi-racial city but the harmony among the various different people is outstanding. After living in US and trips to Europe. I can't find any country or city with so much respect about other's culture and religion. It is simply out of this world.

Strict laws of Singapore plays a very great part in this. STIFF punishments and hefty fines are correct way of maintaining this order and discipline.

Clean Environment
If I remember correctly a piece of news I saw on FOX - that Singapore is the most expensive place on earth to keep an automobile. This is my third visit to this country - I haven't saw one (yeah just one) car emitting smoke.

Blessed tropical weather with plenty of rainfall is a blessing from nature - Singapore is green green. Even the concrete structures (the icons of economic development and success) can't compete the natural beauty of lush green grass, trees and flowers. Thus resulting in clean although heavy air (due to humidity). But air is clean - (Ah!!! in few days i will be back to Karachi and inhaling carbon mono-oxide and sulphur oxides).

Strong CopyRight Laws
Those days are gone when you can find boot-legged Videos and CDs. Yeah those are long gone. Singapore has distinguished itself in Asia with strong copyright controls and it has kinda become a standard which other Asian countries need to follow.

The law which permits caning for spray-painting - i am sure no one want to find what it will do to person involved in copy-right violations. (perhaps google query might answer that).

Safety
Yeap it is safe. Very safe. Literally we don't feel afraid in Singapore. It has no rivals in everywhere in the world in this regard. Walking alone in night is recommended - there are no muggings, no cell-phone theft.

Business Center
Singapore has been center of multi-nationals operating in Asia. Oracle, IBM are just few examples. The strategic location of Singapore provides the best place to companies with interest in Asian markets. With booming tourist trade it is very attractive place for huge retail outlets. What you can buy in Paris, Milan, NYC or London - you will find it in Singapore (100% guaranteed).

Karachi to Singapore Part 7 - Marina Square Mall

Friday, May 18, 2007

A Tour of Marina Square

Oddly enough - I feel like shopping - well it is odd for me cuz I really hate shopping - But I think being in Singapore changed me a bit.
Yesterday I spent most of my time Orchard road, little India shopping area. Today I decided to go towards the Marina Square shopping area.

My hotel's staff highly recommended it - so I decided to check it out. I decided to take MRT to Raffles Avenue and then hopped on a bus towards Marina square area. The view was magnificient. Who recommended me to this place wasn't lying. This place got it all - food courts, shopping areas, believe or not tennis court on the roof!!!!!

Well - first thing I decided to check out the stores - I desperately needed some more Levi's. I hoped I would find an outlet store here. There it was - ok next thing if they got Levi's 569. That's the only jeans I wear and love. $39.99 a pair - bit expensive - made a mental note in my head to check it out later at other place otherwise i could always come back here - it's only a subway and bus ride away from my hotel.

Well they designed this mall with impulsive buying methodology in their minds - as I left Levi's store - I came face to face with Hang Ten store. My mind screamed I need more T-shirts - looks they got jeans too..... well I am on vacation - just check them out. One store I didn't saw - OLD NAVY - they should open one outlet here - it will definitely complete equation.

Although there is a Puma Store - well I quit wearing those sneakers long time ago - sorry folks - my credit card ain't for you. Tag Heuer is there - well If you can afford one of those watches. Sometimes i wonder if the invention of cell phones with clocks and timers has any negative impact on wrist watch sales. Probably in case of cheap watches - but brand names I don't think so. They are more like status symbols they time keeping appratus.

One good thing about this mall - it doesn't have food court at the same level in the main shopping area. Smell of French Fries, pizza, spices and other yummy smell don't interfere when you are charging that card. hahahahha. This architect knew what he was doing - well done chap..

They also had major portion of 3rd floor dedicated to sporting equipment - not my stuff - i feel more comfortable and happy with vdo games and gadgets. Not many electronic stuff though.

It been a while i had subway sandwich - decided to eat healthy (remember that Jared from subway ad) - yeap - foot-long chicken breast was delicious.
With crumbs of bread in my mouth - i decided to move out of this Mall and on to the streets of Singapore. To make more challenging I decided to walk back to the downtown.

Karachi to Singapore - Part 6

Well - I loved the time I spent in Singapore. I really do - so I have decided to extend my stay until May-26-2007. So far I think I have seen every
corner of this small but beautiful city. I wished I had took the trouble of getting Malaysia's visit visa - I do want to visit KL. Well next time - destination is set KL.

In Singapore you can't avoid one thing - Shopping - believe or not - this country developed leaps and bounds due to shopping. People for Pakistan used to come to Singapore for buying electrical and electronic goods. Even I can't resist the temptation to do bit of shopping myself.

After seeing almost every inch of Singapore - it is safe to say - basically there are three broad areas dedicated exclusively for shopping:

  • -> Orchard Road - Upscale - for Joes like me - only window shopping allowed there. Here you will see tourists looking at stuff like they going to buy every shit off the rack. But wait!!!! they are window-shopping just like me. There are some very famous shopping center in this exclusive shopping area :
    • CenterPoint : One of my favourite malls in Singapore. Best for window shopping
    • Lucky Plaza : Second in my list of favorites. Great stores. Surroundings almost made me buy a pair of jeans.
    • Orchard Point : Ok - well name kinda remind of Orchard Mall in Skokie Illinois (they have same name!!!).

  • I much more belong in Little India in shopping center like Sim Lim Square or Mustafa Center. Mohd. Mustafa and Shamsuddin, according to my father, they used to have very small shop in Serangoon Road. But they fought their way up to have a family empire in form of many malls scattered around Singapore area. Little spice mall reminded me of Karachi's saddar area. Desis area all around the globe smell of same curry's spice smell (is that a racists thought?)

  • I also visited the famous IT Mall called Funan Center (www.funan.sg) as my DVD burner died few days ago - I was planning to get one from there. But after looking at prices - i decided I can get better deal in Karachi's techno-center. Conversion rates doesn't favor us (Pakistanis) any more.

My hotel's door man also pointed me towards the Arab Street. Although I didn't find anything in which I might be remotely interested. Rugs and other artisy crap. Tomorrow I want to visit the Marina Bay area.

Karachi to Singapore - Part 4 - Sentosa Visit

After roasting in sun for almost 2 hours - I decided to check out other stuff. Boarded the Sentosa express and head towards sky tower. It is one of the tallest structure on the island. A great spot for taking photographs. Admission costs around 10+ dollars. But believe me it's worth it. By this time, my iPOD's batteries were drained - thank god I invested in external battery pack (which lasts up to 60 hours). A must buy. (
Enegizer ER-I50 IPOD(R) EXTERNAL RECHARGEABLE BATTERY

)

Previously, in my review of Chicago's Museum of Science and Technology I mentioned it's iMAX theater. Sentosa got it's counter part - 4D iMAX - 4D wow!!!! The name itself is intriguing (4 dimensions) - cool. I checked it out. Admission is around 15 dollars. The show included various acts - one I liked the best was the one in audience were simulated to be on a SubMarine's bridge - with water splashing around - whole floor (rather seats) moving in sync with sea waves, the sound, the water - PRICELESS EXPERIENCE. Highly Recommended

One more attraction which i missed during my last Singapore visit was the go-karting. It is not go-kart - since it works with gravity instead of Internal Combustion engine. It is not really fast but good fun with sun setting down.

After that I was very tired - i decided to head back to hotel plus I also wanted to checkout shopping mall at WTC. I headed towards the Cable car station

Damn - I miss sentosa already!!!!

Karachi to Singapore - Part 4 - Sentosa Visit

For those who missed first three parts -
Karachi to Singapore - Part 1 - Initial Preparations

Karachi to Singapore - Part 2 - Leaving 2morrow

Karachi to Singapore - Part 3 Touch down at Changi

Yesterday, I decided to visit the beautiful island of Sentosa Island Website. I decided to take MRT to World Trade Center (WTC), then cable car to the Sentosa Island. A ride which took about 20-30 minutes. Although I wouldn't recommend this mode of transport to people who get sick at heights. But it is highly recommended for photo-graphers - amazing scenary.

Cable car ride normally costs around S$ 10.00 - check out their website for more details Mount Faber

Once there, I bought the general admission ticket costing S$ 15.00. People traveling in groups (or families) are highly advised to check Sentosa's website for promotions and group discounts. Admission itself could be little hefty.

Fort Siloso
10:45 AM - too early for Beach - but perfect time for walking. During my last visit, one attraction I missed checking it out was Fort Siloso (An old fortress built to repel invading navies). Admission costs around S$ 9.00. Old WW-II stuff, old weapons, historical photographs. For history junkie like me - it was like in Heaven :P

Underwater World
This has become a main theme or attraction for every water-front establishment. Admission expensive S$ 19.00 (wow!!!). Well, I don't know what took over me and I decided to explore it - (waste of money) - a lot of fish, and rest of underwater species. Once I got over the loss of my S$ 20.00. I kinda enjoyed.

Food and Beach Time
My wrist-watch announced it is 13:23 - meaning time for food. Tons of choice in this respect - fine dine to fast food junk. I decided to stick with junk food (much to the relief of my wallet). Then grabbed an extra coke can and headed towards the beach. Time to bask in sun.

TO be Continued

P.S. I need a digital camera badly

Karachi to Singapore - Part 3 Touch down at Changi

Monday, May 7, 2007

For those who missed first two parts -
Karachi to Singapore - Part 1 - Initial Preparations

Karachi to Singapore - Part 2 - Leaving 2morrow

I can't stay from blogging - even on vacations. Probably packing my Thinkpad wasn't a great idea - perhaps it is!!!!

I left Karachi yesterday - woke up around 4:00 AM - left for Airport - Flight was scheduled to leave around 6:45 AM. Jinnah INternational Airport was deserted this early - not many flights come to Karachi anyway. This worked out in my favor.

Check out was smooth - ( I always had the early checkout) which gives me time to wander around the airport :P Although not many duty-free shops to look at :(

Any how killed the some how until the flight got announced. Finally boarded the plane around 6:15 AM I was pleased to the plane not even half-full. Found my window seat.

The plane was clean, staff very efficient. No wonder Singapore AIrlines is one of the best in the world. Stewardess went through the routine of emergency drills, plane backed out of the jet-way, turned towards the runway - engine tempo increased. Jet's whine turned into a roar of tornado.

I could imagine pilots calling out V-1 and V-2 and then Rotate - we lifted off - gaining speed and altitude.

One thing about the Singapore Airlines leg room was kinda less as compared to offered by PIA's seating configuration. I think, it would be uncomfortable to tall guys. Although, staff was more professional than any of PIA's or American Airlines I previously flew with.

I would rate this Singapore Airlines 4 out of 5.

Once at the cruising altitude - we were served breakfast - sticking to my routine - I had toast and cereal - coffee was good. So far so good.

Destination Karachi -- Part 1

Karachi - My Home Town

Yep, it's about my home town, i.e., Karachi. The city where I was born, lived some time , and then @ 12 yrs of age moved abroad. I came 1 year ago. Karachi has changed - big time.

It's population has increased many folds, at least 10 folds.
Traffic is totally mad now.
Sky scrappers now dominating the sky line (in few years, It will be like being in Manhattan or something).
As international trade is flourishing it is nice to see foreigners in Karachi. (According to an old joke - 'It's weird - if you see any foreigner in Karachi.'

Places to Visit
New places which I found interesting/refreshing to see include:

KPT Fountain
This fountain became operational and (non-operational) last year. I was fortunate enough to see it one of the first few days - when it was functioning - breath-taking. I am sure you can find pictures of it (running) on flicker.com

Family Park in Clifton
New huge beach front park in clifton - recently opened up. So it is the best time to visit. There is a small fee for entrance. Must do during these hot summer. (God! It is boiling up here).

New Shopping Centers
well - movies, foreign tv channels had one positive impact - i.e., builders started designing the shopping centers like world class malls. Previously, karachi's shopping center (saddar, hyderi, old tariq road shops) ... God.... A shop-a-holic might cure due to noise, dirt, not to mention to no central A.C. Well, at least in one direction i see some progress.

Farm Houses
Another idea which seems like to be borrowed from western media. The idea is to rent a place outside the city to get away all the noise, pollutions, tensions etc. I haven't experienced it yet - but people assure me it is the best way to enjoy a lazy summer week-end.

Clubs
Not partying clubs (although some private homes - might operate as secret clubs) - they are basically Western concept of Country Clubs, where you can socialize, play sports. Generally cater to high-income bracket of the society. I have seen Dream World Resort. It is sweet

Karachi to Singapore - Part 1 - Initial Preparations

Karachi to Singapore - Part 1

For past few months, I have been working my tail off - extra hours, regular job, freelance work = Results in extreme boredom due to same routine. One advantage of doing freelance work - is you kinda doubling your monthly income.

So I have decided to spend some of that by making a trip to Singapore. I love that city. Last time I went there was back in 1997 (exactly 10 years ago - me 10 years ago - wow time really flies).

Preparations Step 1
Previously travel to Singapore was very easy - get a ticket, stuff some dough ($$$) in your pocket and get on an airplane to Singapore, i.e., no visa requirement for Pakistani Nationals. Stuff has changed now - everyone have to get a visa.

Thank God, Singaporean Embassy is located in Karachi, complete information can be found at Visitor Information Requirements

It normally takes about 10-12 days to issue a visa. I applied around April 10 and got my visitor visa on April 18.

Step 2 : Airline Tickets
This is kinda easy, since we don't have many airlines operating from Karachi to Singapore route. (hahahahaha). My choices were

PIA (I'm not 200% patriotic + currently they have alot of issues - I don't wanna get stuck in Singapore)

Singapore Airlines - Well - no internet travel site offered much discount - used I local travel agent. Round trip ticket cost me : Rs. 32920 (including taxes) or about US $ 549
Thai (with more than 1 connection) - (Why I hate multiple connecting flights read my previous post : Chicago to Karachi - Turkish Airlines)

Step 2 - Hotel Reservations
Yeah! Another big step - well you are not going to believe what is my friend's strategy to find cheaper hotel in visiting city!!! According to him, once you have landed in the visiting city, ask a local cab driver about the cheapest hotel in the city. He is just kinda spur of moment kinda guy. Although - this theory has caused us so much stress in NYC couple of year back - but that's another story.

I am lucky in a sense - with choice of hotels I can make use of technology (internet) to find me a great hotel at good price. I checked various websites from big names such as travelocity, expedia, but i found the cheapest rates at HotelPlanner.

Anything for less than US $ 100 in a city like Singapore/Dubai or any tourist-loved city is a blessing.

I am leaving on May-6-2007 for 2 weeks - I will definitely update you guyz once I get back.

Chicago Museum of Science and Technology

Chicago's Museum of Science and Technology

I lived in Chicago for quite long. One of the best place to visit, when I just want to get away from everything (work, personal life, rest of the junk), is Chicago's Museum of Science and Technology. Situated south of loop, it is easily accessible via public transport, car, or helicopter (I am just joking about that).

I always use public transport to move around in the city of Chicago. I took red line to State Street (Jackson Station - near DePaul University), from there you can 6th Jeffery Express (it's last stop is Museum of Science and Technology). 6th Jeff. Express, uses Lake/South shore, so it doesn't got many stops - takes about 30 minutes to get to the museum though.

If you want to visit Museum, the best day is Thursday - as admissions are generally free. General admission doesn't include parking fees or various shows.

OmniMax theater shows are brilliant. They are simply terrific. Last time I watched the show about the cosmos and the milky way. Simply great with intense commentary. This is a must must!!

From time to time, Museum organizes special shows (currently they are exhibiting U-505 submarine show). I had the opportunity to watch show on Titanic. It was great, with original footage of ships's departure and under water wreckage.

Museum is organized superbly, there is a section about auto-mobiles, planes, biology, and astronomy etc. Each section deserves some time to enjoy to the fullest.

Feeling hungry now? No worries, there is big food court at the ground level - where you can order from your favorite pizza to Big Mac, or some coffee all under one roof.
